Recently, I've been dabbling with making sushi. With the opening of Mitsuwa, a Japanese supermarket, suddenly sushi ingredients were accessible to the average shopper. I made some tuna yamakake, one of my favorites, for my mom on Mother's Day, and then squid sushi two weeks later (I had to wait for a sushi knife to arrive from Amazon).
Then, this weekend. It started on Saturday, when I bought $80 of groceries meant for one meal. It consisted of sake and sushi. Then, I made 4 cups of sushi rice, using regular rice. Then, I added too much vinegar to the rice so it was too sour. However, I didn't want to waste it, so I would spend the rest of the weekend eating it.
Saturday lunch, I made yellowtail sushi. It could use more work. It was my first time. It was ok. I'd give it a C.
Saturday dinner, I made a huge bowl of tuna yamakake. It tasted great, and had all the right ingredients.
Sunday lunch, I made onigiri with the sour leftover sushi rice. It was ok.
Sunday dinner, I made squid sushi with the leftover rice. However, I forgot to rinse the squid before using it, and it smelled a little rancid (maybe I shouldn't have kept it for one day in the fridge). However, the sushi was noticeably improved, and it tasted great.
Monday lunch, I made a huge bowl of tuna yamakake. The tuna at this point was two days old, and smelled bad. Nonetheless, I muscled through.
Monday afternoon, in the middle of watching Tessou play GTA6, I had to poop, and the poop smelled horrible, like rotten fish. I think it was the squid or tuna. I'm a little surprised I didn't get sick.
Tonight for dinner, I plan to finish off the leftover sour sushi rice by making it into onigiri.
I think what's been keeping me from getting ill is that I've been drinking a little sake with each meal.
Anyways, hopefully I'll learn from this and not repeat the same mistakes next time.
So, that's how my weekend went, with games of Starcraft scattered in between.
Also, I guess in hindsight, the $80 was spread amongst 6 meals, making the average cost less than $20. So... not bad; worked out in the end.
