At the onset of the redesign of my site, there were a few things that I learned from my first design:
Picking colors, themes, and styles was really harder than it looked.  I used to be pretty creative and artistic.  Now, I'm more of an engineer, and I just try to build things to specs.  So, with all the colors of the spectrum for me to choose from, I must say, the end result didn't look as good as I wanted it to.
I was only touching the surface of what the Dojo Toolkit had to offer.  There were some sites I saw which showed me a new side of Dojo I never knew was possible.  For examples, see this editor demothis calendar demothis layout demo,  and this charting demo.
Stylistically, I was totally an amateur when it came to proper typography.  Here are a few of the rules I picked up: for legible text which are nice to look at, use 1.4-1.6 line-height, column length should only fit 60-80 characters, use fonts where the lowercase letters are actually quite large (disproportionately large), and have lots of whitespace.  I was mistakenly going after the goal of cramming in as much text as possible within as little space as possible, so as to utilize as much of the screen as possible.  I think this time around, I got it right - a good balance between designing for the wide-screen aspect ratio, and fitting a satisfactory amount of content the page, without needing to scroll!  Now, I just need to spruce things up a bit with some pictures.
This second attempt is really turning out to be more fun than I had anticipated.
